8F35 and 8F24 Transmission - Faults, Problems, Repair Costs, User Reviews

Skrzynia Forda 8F35 od strony konwertera, w otworze wlewu pomarańczowa zaślepka

The Ford 8F35 automatic transmission is an advanced gearbox system used in Ford (Transit, Mondeo MK5, Edge, Focus Mk4, Kuga) vehicles, sold under the trade name SelectShift. It is the successor to the six-speed 6F35, with which it shares some design solutions. Equipped with electronic control systems, it enables smooth and comfortable driving through automatic gear shifts. Different driving modes and on-board diagnostics help manage fuel consumption. The 8F35 transmission works with vehicle systems that monitor operating parameters and supports automatic parking in select versions. This solution is used in various vehicle models, providing performance and comfort during everyday driving. Below are the most common faults that users of Ford 8F35 automatic transmissions may encounter, along with their potential causes:

Most Common Faults

1. Jerking or rough gear shifting: This problem can occur as a result of low transmission fluid level or mechanical damage. Some 2019 Edge/Nautilus vehicles equipped with the 8F57 transmission may produce harsh upshifts and downshifts. They may also have harsh engagements from Park to Reverse, Park to Drive, or Reverse to Drive (without DTCs present). The vehicle may also exhibit a harsh 4th to 5th upshift.

This can result from various software parameters of the powertrain control module (PCM) during harsh gear engagements from different selector positions. The PCM module must be reprogrammed to eliminate these symptoms.

2. Transmission fluid leaks: Transmission fluid leaks are a common problem in automatic transmissions. In some 2019 Focus/Transit Connect/Edge/Nautilus vehicles equipped with the 8F35 transmission, fluid leaks may occur from the transmission axle halfshaft seal. This condition may be caused by an excessive amount of inner seal grease (dark brown) that was applied during axle seal manufacturing. Thoroughly clean the area. If the leak persists, replace the seal.

3. Delayed shift response: Delayed response to gear changes can result from control system issues, improper calibration, or worn clutch plates. Some 2019 Edge/Nautilus/Transit Connect vehicles equipped with the 8F35 transmission may display an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0766 and/or intermittent or delayed reverse gear engagement.

This can be caused by contamination of the valve body separator plate. To resolve the problem, the valve body must be rebuilt

4. Limp mode or transmission error: The 8F35 transmission can enter limp mode, which can be caused by sensor damage, control system faults, other electronic problems, or mechanical transmission failure.

5. Noise during operation: High noise levels during transmission operation can result from worn bearings or other mechanical damage.

6. Vibrations or shudder: Vibrations or shudder can occur as a result of problems with mechanical components such as gears, clutch plates, or bearings.

7. Gear selector engagement problem (Park to Reverse/Drive): Abnormal behavior when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse may indicate an issue with the control system.

8. Jerking or shaking when pulling away: This can be the result of problems with clutch plates, weakened springs in the torque converter, or low pressure in the hydraulic system.

9. High temperature level: Excessively high transmission fluid temperature can indicate problems with cooling or fluid circulation inside the transmission.

10. Electronic problems: Electronic problems, such as sensor or control module failures, can lead to various issues in transmission operation. Codes U2100 and U2101 indicate that the module is not configured correctly. Check the repair history for module replacement and verify that all adaptive learning and training procedures have been completed.

Repair cost

The cost of repairing the Ford 8F35 automatic transmission can vary significantly depending on the type of fault and the extent of damage. Automatic transmissions are complex and precision systems, which affects repair costs. The repair cost depends on the specific problem affecting the transmission. Simple repairs, such as replacing damaged sensors, are less expensive than more complex jobs, such as replacing damaged clutch plates or bearings, or even a complete transmission rebuild.

In the event of a major failure, it may be necessary to replace the entire transmission, which can cost from several to over a dozen thousand PLN. The ASB Długołęka workshop offers new 8F35 transmissions.

To reduce the risk of serious failure and extend the life of the 8F35 transmission, follow the manufacturer service schedule and use fluid and filters compliant with specification. An eight-speed transmission is more complex than older designs, so repairs caused by neglected maintenance cost many times more than routine service itself.

User reviews

User reviews of the Ford 8F35 automatic transmission vary, here are sample reviews found online:

  1. Positive review: "I have owned a Ford with the 8F35 for two years and I am very satisfied with how this transmission works. Gear shifts are smooth and trouble-free, and throttle response is instantaneous. In sport mode the transmission works even better, giving me full control over speed and torque. Overall, it is a great transmission for daily driving."

  2. Neutral review: "I have mixed feelings about the 8F35 transmission in my Ford. Most of the time it works properly, but sometimes there is a delay when shifting gears, especially at low speeds. I think it needs better calibration. Overall, when it works properly it is great, but these minor problems can be annoying."

  3. Negative review: "Unfortunately, my experience with the 8F35 is not positive. The transmission sometimes shudders when changing gears, and I have also noticed delays in throttle response. I have been to the workshop several times, but the problem still persists. It really affects driving comfort and I hope Ford improves this model in the future."
