Torque converter rebuild in a MAN TGS truck

The MAN TGS is a road-transport truck built in many drivetrain variants and configurations, used on long-haul routes as well as in local transport.

The torque converter delivered to our workshop came from just such a vehicle. The customer complained of severe vehicle vibration while driving and RPM fluctuation. Suspicion fell on a burned-out so-called lock-up.

Why is rebuilding the friction lining important?

Friction lining wear in a torque converter can lead to a series of problems. Reduced effectiveness can impact vehicle performance, leading to increased fuel consumption and power loss. In addition, neglecting rebuilding can lead to more serious torque converter damage, which in turn would require costly repair or replacement of the entire system.

Repair Process

The torque converter (also called a hydrodynamic clutch) works in every vehicle with an automatic transmission. The friction lining takes part in transmitting torque; over time it wears and reduces the converter's efficiency and life. That is when the lining is rebuilt. This was one of those cases.

Rebuilding the friction lining has several stages. The first is disassembly of the torque converter and cutting it open, which provides access to the lining. Next, the worn lining layer is removed, and the surface is prepared for applying a new layer. This process requires specialized equipment and experience, as the lining layer must be applied evenly and precisely to ensure optimal torque converter operation.

Rebuilding the friction lining offers many benefits. First, it is a significantly cheaper option than purchasing a new torque converter. Second, it allows for extending torque converter service life, which translates into longer vehicle durability. Finally, the rebuild process also reduces the environmental impact of vehicles by cutting down the amount of waste generated from replacing worn linings. Rebuilding the friction lining therefore pays off technically, economically and ecologically. Regular converter checks and a timely rebuild keep the vehicle in good working order for years.

Which code to look for on the registration document

On the last page of the vehicle registration document there is a dense square. That is the Aztec code.
