The FW6A transmission, also called GW6A-EL, is a 6-speed automatic transmission from the SkyActiv-Drive family, developed specifically for Mazda vehicles. It is widely used across various Mazda models, including popular vehicles such as Mazda CX3, CX5, CX7, Mazda 3, and Mazda 6. This transmission directly affects the dynamics and performance of these vehicles.

However, some models, such as Mazda with the FW6A automatic transmission, can experience certain problems that can cause frustration for drivers.

Potential Problems with the FW6A Transmission

Despite the advantages of the FW6A transmission, some users may encounter issues during operation. Here are several potential problems that can occur:

  1. Valve body issues: After driving between 75,000 and 150,000 kilometers, there is a risk of valve body issues in the transmission. 

  2. Accumulator Piston Failures: In the FW6A transmission, there are two accumulator pistons that are subjected to heavy loads. Their failure can result in rapid torque converter lock-up as well as transmission slipping or jerking when shifting between gears.

After the valve body rebuild, the workshop also performs transmission adaptation, which improves gear shifting comfort in the car. The cost of the valve body rebuild, adaptation, and transmission fluid filter replacement along with fluid and oil pan gasket is between PLN 5500-6500 gross.
