Skrzynia TF80-SC z konwerterem spiętym płaskownikiem, na kołnierzu widoczne ślady rdzy

The Aisin TF-80 is an automatic transmission used by many car manufacturers around the world.

The Aisin TF-80 is also known as the AWF21, AF40-6 and TF-80SD (a version for Volvo, sold under the name Geartronic). It shifts smoothly and precisely. Below: what fails most often, how to spot it and what a repair costs.

Most Common Faults

The most common faults of the AF40 TF-80 transmission include:

  • Mechanical damage, such as wear on gears, clutches, or bearings. This can be caused by excessive slip, improper operation, or incorrect maintenance.
  • The most common cause of failure in this transmission model is damage to the C1/C3 clutch drum
  • Fluid leaks, which can be caused by damaged gaskets or seals. They lead to low transmission fluid levels, which can cause internal transmission damage.
  • Electronics failures, such as damage to the transmission control unit (TCU) or sensors. These can be caused by electrical interference or mechanical damage.

Typical symptoms of AF40/TF-80 transmission faults include:

  • Jerking during gear shifts (from 5th to 4th gear) and when moving off
  • Inability to shift gears
  • High engine RPM at low vehicle speed
  • Squeaking, knocking, or grinding noises

If any of these symptoms appear, visit a mechanic as soon as possible. Early detection and repair of faults can prevent further damage to the transmission and extend its lifespan.

Below are a few tips that can help prevent faults in the AF40 transmission:

  • Change transmission fluid regularly
  • Do not overload the transmission
  • Avoid aggressive maneuvers
  • Visit a mechanic if abnormal symptoms appear

Repair Cost

The repair cost of the AF40 automatic transmission can vary significantly depending on the type of fault and the extent of damage. Automatic transmissions are complex and precision engineered assemblies, which affects repair costs. The repair cost depends on the specific problem occurring in the transmission. Simple repairs, such as replacing damaged sensors, can be less expensive than more complicated repairs, such as replacing worn clutch plates or bearings, or even a complete transmission rebuild.

In the event of a major failure, replacing the entire transmission may be necessary, which can cost anywhere from several thousand to over ten thousand PLN. The ASB Długołęka workshop offers new AF40/TF-80 transmissions.

To minimize the risk of serious failure and extend transmission lifespan, it is important to adhere to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule and use high-quality transmission fluid and filters.

User Reviews

User reviews of the Aisin AF40 automatic transmission are mixed. Here are example reviews that can be found online:

  1. Positive review: "I drive a car equipped with the Aisin TF-80 (AF40) transmission and I must admit that I am impressed by its performance. From the moment I started driving this vehicle, the transmission has surprised me with its smoothness and precise operation."

  2. Neutral review: "I drive a car equipped with the Aisin TF-80 (AF40) transmission and I can share my observations regarding this transmission system.

On one hand, the Aisin TF-80 (AF40) transmission offers certain benefits. First and foremost, gear shifts occur smoothly without noticeable jerking, resulting in a more pleasant driving experience for the driver and passengers. In addition, the transmission efficiency seems satisfactory, and the electronic and hydraulic systems ensure accurate and trouble-free gear changes.

On the other hand, like any mechanical component, the Aisin TF-80 (AF40) transmission can experience certain issues. There are user reports concerning various faults, such as fluid leaks, electronic issues, or erratic operation while driving. However, these are not widespread problems, and most users seem satisfied with the overall performance and reliability of this transmission."
