Ford 10R80: failures, the CDF drum and repair
The 10R80 is a ten-speed automatic for rear-wheel drive, developed jointly by Ford and GM. It is the younger sibling of the 6R80. What sets it apart is a different fluid, different transmission software and its own typical faults. The most common workshop topic is the C-D-F clutch drum.
Which cars use it
You will find the 10R80 in, among others:
- the F-150,
- the Mustang (model years with the ten-speed automatic, including the S650),
- the Expedition / Lincoln Navigator,
- the Ranger,
- the Everest (markets outside Poland),
- selected Explorer / Aviator models and other cars with this transmission family.
Besides the 10R80, Ford also has the 10R60 and the 10R140. The design is similar, but the parts are usually not interchangeable. The CDF drum version depends on the engine and the specific car.
Typical symptoms
- a so-called flare during a gear change (engine speed jumps up for a moment), jerking, a brief loss of drive,
- shift quality that depends on temperature: good one moment, bad the next,
- gear ratio and clutch slip fault codes,
- symptoms that build up when hot and under load,
- after a valve body replacement it can get worse if the problem is in the CDF drum.
The C-D-F drum, the most common workshop topic
The inner sleeve of the C-D-F drum can move out of its factory position. The result is flare, bangs during gear changes, a brief loss of drive and poor quality shifts that an adaptation alone will not cure. Replacing the valve body often does nothing. Only a new CDF drum helps.
CDF drums are not universal. Ford has versions for different engines, with a different number of C, D and F clutch plates, for example for the 2.3, the 5.0 and the Expedition 3.5. Choosing the wrong drum during a rebuild ends in vibration and slipping, even though the transmission was assembled correctly.
Fluid and calibration
The 10R family needs the right fluid (Mercon ULV) and the correct level, checked at a specific temperature. The wrong oil causes problems with gear changes. Skipping gears is normal in this model and comes from the transmission software the manufacturer uses.
A diagnostic note: engine misfires can imitate transmission slip. We rule out the engine first.
