Ford 6R80: failures, diagnostics and repair
The 6R80 is Ford's six-speed automatic for rear-wheel drive, from a family derived from the ZF 6HP. It is the older sibling of the 10R80. This article covers where it is used, what usually fails in it and how diagnostics goes.
Which cars use it
Ford fitted the 6R80 and the closely related 6R60, 6R75 and 6R80 variants to many rear-wheel drive and 4x4 vehicles:
- the Mustang (generations with the six-speed automatic, before the 10R80),
- the F-150,
- the Explorer and related SUVs,
- the Transit and other commercial vehicles with this transmission family,
- selected Expedition and Excursion models, depending on the market and engine.
Do not confuse it with the 6F35: that one is for front-wheel drive and has a different design.
Typical symptoms
- harsh or delayed 1-2 and 2-1 shifts,
- slipping under load, no higher gears,
- torque converter lock-up shudder at a steady speed,
- solenoid, pressure or gear ratio fault codes (for example solenoid E and code P0771, a common workshop topic),
- metal particles in the pan after overheating.
Solenoid, hydraulics or mechanical parts?
The same code can mean different repairs. Sometimes the solenoid current is correct, an air test shows the clutch is sealed, and the problem is in the mechanical parts, for example the planetary gearset splines. Sometimes it is the other way round and the valve body or solenoid E is to blame. Our order is: reproduce the symptom, read the diagnostic scan tool data, check the pan, and only then decide on the scope of the repair.
The recommended fluid is Mercon LV. Generic ATF is a quick way to make the shifts worse.
Diagnostics at ASB
- Interview: whether the fluid has been changed, whether the car has been used for towing.
- A scan of all modules and a test drive.
- Fluid and pan.
- Diagnostic scan tool data: pressures, slip, torque converter lock-up, temperature.
- If needed, an air test and an assessment of whether the valve body or the mechanical parts inside the transmission are to blame.
Repair routes
- fluid and adaptations, when contamination is light and the data confirm it,
- the valve body or the solenoids,
- the torque converter, when a lock-up problem is confirmed,
- rebuilding the clutch plates and other parts inside the transmission.
Want a quote? The price depends on diagnostics: with a clean pan and a bad solenoid it will be different than with a burnt planetary gearset. Write to us through the form with the VIN, the model (Mustang, F-150, Explorer) and the symptoms.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 6R80 the same as the 6F35?
No. The 6F35 is for front-wheel drive, the 6R80 for rear-wheel drive and 4x4.
Does replacing the valve body always solve P0771?
No. You need to rule out a mechanical fault in the transmission and check how the solenoid actually works.
How do I get a quote?
After diagnostics or through the form.
