Mercedes 722.6 / NAG1: code P0741 (TCC slip), what it means and how to fix it

P0741 is a code related to torque converter lock-up clutch (TCC) slip. In Mercedes cars with the 722.6 transmission (and in the related NAG1 used by other brands) it most often shows up as shudder, engine speed rising at a steady road speed, or limp mode once the transmission is warm.

P0741 does not always mean a new torque converter. The cause may be the TCC valve or passage in the valve body, the wiring, contaminated fluid or the converter itself. Diagnostics starts with the fluid and the data in a diagnostic scan tool, before anyone orders a converter blind.

Symptoms

• shudder at 60-120 km/h under light throttle,
• engine speed rising without acceleration (lock-up clutch slip),
• code P0741 or related TCC codes,
• the symptom goes away for a while after a restart and returns when hot,
• sometimes pressure or communication fault codes as well.

What we check first

1. Confirming the code and the conditions: fluid temperature, load, gear, and whether the control unit applies the lock-up at all.
2. Fluid and pan condition: metal particles, smell, emulsion.
3. Service history: whether the fluid has been changed.
4. Transmission control unit logs: TCC slip, pressures, valve operation.
5. Assessing the valve body (TCC regulator and passage) against the converter itself.

Valve body or torque converter?

Valve body: symptoms that depend on temperature and load, often no metal particles from the converter, worn valve bores.

Torque converter: lock-up shudder, blue clutch plates or particles typical of the TCC clutch, a history of overheating.

NAG1 is the same design under the name used by other brands. We describe it from the Mercedes side because those are the cars we see most often.

Can you drive with P0741?

It is sometimes fine for getting to the workshop. Longer driving can finish off the TCC clutch and contaminate the whole transmission. If it shudders on longer trips, do not put off the visit.
